The Cherry Orchard
This project presented me with five "lands" to design costumes for within a theme park. It aided me in exploring a wide variety of costume needs, styles, and character type.
The Lands
Windspiration: In this gravity defying aerial act, two bird-inspired couples interact through silk performances as the male birds compete for attention. Females perform solos and pas de deux with males.
Fren-Z: In this futuristic, jump-stilts show 3 kinds of alien creatures find themselves at the “watering hole” vying for the energy-glowing juice inside the crater. They discover if they work together they all can partake.
Arctic Antics: In this comedic, young ages ice-skating mascot show a penguin, puffin, and polar bear cub get into hijinks on the ice.
Heartbeat: In this percussive show, two vying teams use dance and music to compete and show off their passion for music.
Fintastic: In this aquatic concert show, a lead male and female singer are backed by a group of dancers.
Design Approach
This project was exciting, as it gave me creative freedom in so many directions. I had the opportunity to design silk performers, ice-skating mascots, and jump stilt performers! This also gave me the chance to research the practical needs of these performers. Where on the body silk performers need clear of additional trim for safety, how to obscure the human form on jump stilt performers, and how much clearance from the ice that performers need at the hem of their costumes to execute the tricks often incorporated in their performances. Additionally, with each land being so different, I had the opportunity to follow many different creative impulses on a variety of projects at the same time.
WINDspiration
Inspired by birds of paradise, this couple's bold colors and dynamic feather details are sure to catch the eye of audience members!
Interpreting popular pairings such as fire and ice within the realm of birds, this couple's costumes aim to complement and balance one another while also shining on their own.
Fren-Z
Showcasing the distortion of the human form through jump stilt performers, these creatures live in a realm of their own. The amount of creative liberty allowed on this project was freeing, and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process.

This project was particularly fun, as I created a print to be incorporated in each team's costumes in order to support the idea that they were from the same tribes.

Designing costumes for a concert show was a blast, and as a huge fan of all things aquatic, I was excited to make a splash with my designs!
